Savings Goal Monthly Calculator

Calculate the straight-line monthly contribution for a target and date, or estimate the date from a monthly amount, with limits visible.

Short answer

Subtract the amount already saved from the target, then divide the remainder by the months available. If you know the affordable monthly amount instead, divide the remainder by that amount and round up to a whole month. Treat the result as a straight-line planning estimate.

Start with target, current amount and time

Name the goal, target amount, amount already saved and intended date. Check that the target still reflects the likely cost. A long-dated target may need review for price change or inflation; the simple calculation does not predict either.

When the date is fixed, monthly contribution equals the remaining amount divided by the months available. When the monthly amount is fixed, required months equal the remaining amount divided by the contribution, rounded up. Verify month boundaries when the exact day matters.

Compare the number with available cash

MoneyHelper frames the monthly amount as a balance between the goal, time available and spare cash. Add the required contributions across all active goals before treating one result as affordable. A technically correct number can still exceed the amount available after essential costs, priority debts and an emergency buffer.

Interest could shorten the route and fees or changing contributions could lengthen it. Use provider statements or a regulated calculation where those effects are material.

01

What is the current target and what could change its cost?

Makes the amount and uncertainty explicit.

02

How much is already available for this goal?

Prevents counting money assigned elsewhere.

03

What monthly amount remains after essential commitments?

Tests the computed contribution against capacity.

04

When will I update the target, date or amount?

Keeps the plan responsive to changed evidence.

Use purchase delay as information

Before an optional purchase, divide its cost by the current monthly contribution to estimate how much saving time it represents. This is a comparison, not a command to avoid spending. The decision depends on purpose, consequence and available money.

The Savings Goal Planner computes date-led and amount-led routes and stores the goals locally in the browser. Export a backup before changing browser or device.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include savings interest?

No. The stated route is a straight-line estimate unless the product explicitly says otherwise.

What if the monthly amount is unaffordable?

Extend the date, change the target, change another commitment or pause the goal. Do not present unavailable cash as a plan.

Can I track several goals?

Yes, but add their monthly requirements and compare the total with the amount actually available.

What private and pay once mean

Private means the downloaded tool needs no account and makes no network requests, so the publisher receives no copy of what you enter. The record stays in the current browser unless you export it. Browser storage and exported backups are not encrypted or protected from another person who can use the same browser profile or read the file.

Pay once means you may keep reusing the version you downloaded without a subscription. Future major versions and continuing support are separate unless they are explicitly included. There is no cloud sync: export a backup before clearing browser data or changing device.

Use the smallest useful tool

The method above does not require a purchase. If a retained local record would reduce repeated setup, review the relevant interactive tool after its tested release.

No account. Usually six questions. Uses this page as context.
